How to Play Golden Unicorn - The Rules Explained

The basic idea of the game is to collect as many points as possible by racing your unicorn around the board and taking advantage of special cards and abilities. The first player to reach 100 points or more wins the game.

Getting Started

To begin, each player will need their own set of pieces, which include: 1 pink unicorn, 1 blue unicorn, 1 white horse, 6 rainbow tiles, and 18 point tokens. The rainbow tiles are placed in the middle of the game board in no particular order, while the remaining pieces are placed evenly among the players.

The youngest player goes first and play passes clockwise. On a player's turn they will do one of three things: move their pieces, play a card, or pick up a tile.

To move their pieces, a player must first roll the dice. They then select one of their pieces to move that many spaces along the track. If they land on a coloured space, they must take the corresponding tile and add it to their collection. However, if they land on a opponents piece, they must replace it with one of their own pieces instead. The last thing to note about moving is that unicorns can only move forward and horses can only move backwards - so make sure you plan your moves accordingly!

If a player has any cards in their hand, they can choose to play one at this time. Cards can be used to help players collect points, gain extra movement, or get out of difficult situations. Once played, the card goes into the discard pile and cannot be used again.

Finally, if a player has any tiles left in their hand after moving and playing cards, they must pick up three new tiles from the middle of the board. Then it's on to the next player!

Scoring Points

There are three ways to score points in Golden Unicorn: by collecting tiles from around the board, by completing sets of rainbows (3 matching colours), or by winning one of three rounds. Players will want to focus on scoring as many points as possible as quickly as possible in order to win! Sets of rainbows are worth 10 points each at any time during the game (except for during Round 3 when they are worth 20 points each). The first player to complete all six sets wins 20 bonus points for a total of 120 points (=10x6). If two or more players complete all six sets at once then whoever has completed them first gets those 20 bonus points - no matter what order they were completed in*.

*Completing all six sets is not necessary to win the game - it just gives players an extra way to score lots of points quickly!

Round 1 is over when either player collects their 4th red tile (winning 4 rounds), when either player collects their 7th green tile (winning 7 rounds), or when either player collects their 10th blue tile (winning 10 rounds). At this point each player tallies up their current score (+/- any penalties) and whoever has more than 50 points is declared winner of Round 1.

Round 2 is over when either player collects their 5th yellow tile (winning 5 rounds), when either player collects their 8th orange tile (winning 8 rounds), or when either player collects their 11th purple tile (winning 11 rounds). At this point each player tallies up their current score (+/- any penalties) and whoever has more than 75 points is declared winner of Round 2.

The final round is over when either player collects their 6th violet tile (winning 6 rounds). At this point each player tallies up their current score (+/- any penalties) and whoever has more than 100 points is declared winner of Golden Unicorn!
